    Heraklion is Crete's largest city and capital, and for most travelers, it's the island's arrival point. Behind the Venetian city walls lies a bustling city center, the harbor with Koules Fortress, and the Archaeological Museum, home to the most important collection of Minoan art.You come for the museum and the Palace of Knossos, a UNESCO World Heritage site for Minoan Palace Centres from 2025. The city itself is more for work than leisure, but a day is well spent on the old town, market, and city walls.

    The world's most significant collection of Minoan art, arranged chronologically over two floors. Here you'll find the originals, replaced by copies at Knossos: the Snake Goddesses, the Bull-Leaping Fresco, the Phaistos Disc with its still undeciphered script. Plan two to three hours and go before or after Knossos, not instead of it.

    The largest palace of Minoan culture, located about five kilometers south of the city center, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Minoan Palace Centres' since 2025. Arthur Evans excavated it from 1900 and reconstructed parts in concrete. While these interventions are professionally controversial, they make the complex layout with its lightwells, staircases, and storerooms spatially comprehensible. The site is largely shadeless; go early and bring water.

    The Venetian sea fortress Rocca a Mare, known locally as Koules, has guarded the harbour entrance since the 16th century. After extensive renovation, it is accessible again. Inside are 26 vaulted rooms and an exhibition; from the roof, you have views over the harbour and city. Opposite stand the Venetian shipyards.

    The 1628 fountain supplied the city with water via a 15 km pipeline from Mount Juchtas. Four 14th-century lions support its basin, whose reliefs depict Greek mythology. The surrounding square remains the city's central meeting point, lined with cafés and Bougatsa shops.

    5Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis

    On the Martinengo Bastion, south of the Venetian city walls, lies the humble grave of the writer who became world-renowned with Alexis Zorbas. Because the Orthodox Church denied him a church burial, he was interred on the wall. His epitaph on the wooden cross reads: I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free. From above, you look out over the city to Mount Juchtas.

    Where the Archaeological Museum ends with the Romans, this house picks up: Byzantine icons, the Venetian and Ottoman periods, the resistance against the German occupation. Also on display are the only two paintings by El Greco that remained on his home island, and a reconstructed study of Nikos Kazantzakis.

    Peskesi is located in a restored historic mansion in the Old Town of Heraklion. The cuisine is dedicated to traditional Cretan recipes and almost forgotten regional ingredients, prepared using ancient methods. Some of the products come from their own organically cultivated farm, the rest from selected Cretan producers.

    Kirkor is a Bougatsa bakery on Löwenplatz, founded in 1922 by an Armenian refugee and still family-owned today. The bougatsa is hand-stretched and traditionally filled with cream or Mizithra, served with Greek coffee. Open from early morning.

    The Erganos is a tavern away from the tourist centre of Heraklion. It serves traditional Cretan and Greek home cooking, prepared just like in a family kitchen. The staff are happy to explain how the dishes are made.

    Heraklion has the liveliest food culture on the island, because here food is cooked not for travelers, but for locals. Around Market Street 1866 and in the alleys south of Lion Square, Mezedopolia are lined up.

    Minoan RootsA few kilometers south of the city lay Knossos, the largest center of the Bronze Age Minoan culture. Since 2025, Knossos, along with Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos, and Kydonia, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Minoan Palace Centers.” The finds from the excavations, led by Arthur Evans starting in 1900, are now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.Venetians and OttomansVenice acquired Crete after the Fourth Crusade and held the city, then known as Candia, until 1669. Dating from this period are the city walls with seven bastions, the Koules Fortress, the Loggia (1626-1628), and the Morosini Fountain (1628). From 1648 to 1669, the Ottomans besieged the city for 21 years, one of the longest sieges in history. Under Ottoman rule, churches were converted into mosques, including Agios Titos.Kazantzakis and Cretan MusicHeraklion is the hometown of Nikos Kazantzakis, author of “Zorba the Greek” (Alexis Sorbas). His tomb is located on the Martinengo Bastion. You can hear Cretan music, featuring the lyra and lute, in some of the city's tavernas and at festivals in the surrounding villages.

    On Foot and by City BusThe city center, between the harbor, Löwenplatz, and the Archaeological Museum, is compact, and many streets are pedestrian zones. City buses also run to the airport and Knossos; tickets can be bought at kiosks, machines, or from the driver.Intercity BusesKTEL buses connect Heraklion with Chania and Rethymno in the west, with Agios Nikolaos and Sitia in the east, and with Matala and other places in the south. The bus stations are located at the harbor and the Chania Gate.Airport, Ferries, and Rental CarsNikos Kazantzakis Airport is located approximately five kilometers east of the city center and is Greece's second-largest. A new airport is being built near Kastelli, about 40 kilometers southeast; it is currently scheduled to open in 2028. Ferries to Piraeus depart daily from the port in front of the Old Town. A rental car is practical for excursions into the hinterland; rental companies can be found at the airport and in the city.
