Bajawa lies at around 1,100 m in the highlands of Flores, overlooked by the volcanic cone Inerie. The small town serves as a gateway to the traditional Ngada villages with their megaliths and ancestor shrines.
Bajawa is the main town of the Ngada district and a common stop on the way between Labuan Bajo and Ende. The town itself is small and cool. Around 20 km south, at the foot of Mount Inerie, lie the villages of Bena and Gurusina, featuring stone terraces, megaliths, and thatched-roof houses. The surrounding area offers hot springs and coffee plantations. On the north coast is Riung, with the offshore islands of the 17 Pulau Marine Park. For the villages, it's best to rent a scooter or a car with a driver.
