    Oristano, provincial capital in western Sardinia, was in the Middle Ages capital of the Judicate of Arborea. The old town, with Piazza Eleonora, the cathedral, and the Tower of Mariano II, is small. In the neighboring municipality of Cabras lie the Sinis Peninsula with the excavations of Tharros and beaches like Is Arutas, Maimoni and Mari Ermi.

    Piazza Eleonora d'Arborea

    1Piazza Eleonora d'Arborea

    The central square is named after Eleonora d'Arborea, who ruled the Judicate of Arborea and issued the Carta de Logu, traditionally dated to 1392. This legal code was valid in Sardinia until 1827. Her monument was inaugurated in 1881. Located on the square is the Palazzo degli Scolopi, the seat of the city administration.

    The archaeological museum houses one of the most important collections of finds from Tharros, including the Pischedda Collection. In a separate hall, altarpieces are displayed, including a work by Pietro Cavaro from 1533. According to the museum's website, it has been closed for renovation works since February 19, 2024. Please check its current status before visiting.

    3Excavations of Tharros

    Tharros is located in the south of the Sinis Peninsula near Cape San Marco, within the municipality of Cabras. The city was likely founded by Phoenicians in the 8th century BC and was inhabited during Punic and Roman periods. Preserved remains include paved Roman roads laid out in a grid pattern, three thermal bath complexes by the sea, and temple foundations, among them two re-erected columns of a temple overlooking the sea.

    4Spiaggia di Seu

    The small beach is located in a bay of the Seu Oasis on the Sinis Peninsula. This former hunting ground is now a WWF-managed oasis and belongs to the Sinis Marine Protected Area. The landscape is characterized by macchia, pine forest, and dunes.

    The tower on Piazza Roma, also known as Torre di San Cristoforo or Port'a Ponti, was built in 1290. It was one of the two main gates of the medieval city wall.

    The small church, built from reused sandstone blocks presumably from the walls of Tharros, dates back to the mid-6th century during the Byzantine era and was extended in the 9th and 10th centuries. It is one of Sardinia's oldest churches and lies just a few hundred meters from Tharros.

    Capital of ArboreaAround 1070, the Archbishop of Arborea moved his seat from Tharros to Oristano, after which Judge Orzocco I. made the city the capital of the Judicate of Arborea. Eleonora d'Arborea issued the Carta de Logu, traditionally dated to 1392, a code of law that remained in force on the island until 1827. Her monument was inaugurated in 1881.BuildingsThe Tower of Mariano II, dating from 1290, was one of the two main gates of the city wall. The Cathedral has been documented since 1131, acquiring its current Baroque appearance from 1729 onwards.SartigliaThe Sartiglia takes place on the last Sunday and last Tuesday of Carnival. The Sunday ride is organized by the Farmers' Guild, the Tuesday ride by the Carpenters' Guild.
