Cagliari, founded as Karalis by the Phoenicians, boasts a history of over three millennia, deeply embedded in its urban landscape. Key eras include Punic and Roman rule, with traces like the impressive Roman Amphitheatre still visible today. In the Middle Ages, the Pisans particularly shaped the city, reflected in the construction of the Castello district with its distinctive fortification towers and Santa Maria Cathedral.The long Spanish era also left architectural and cultural marks, from palaces to religious festivals. A central cultural expression is the annual Festival of Sant'Efisio in early May, one of Europe's largest and oldest religious processions, celebrating deep Sardinian traditions. The local Sardinian language and craftsmanship, particularly ceramics and weaving, are other important facets of Cagliari's cultural identity that remain vibrantly preserved to this day.

Cagliari is easily explored thanks to CTM's well-developed public transport network. In addition to numerous bus lines, the modern Metroleggera (light rail) connects key points and districts. It is advisable to use multi-journey tickets, available at tobacconists, vending machines, or via the 'CTM Busfinder' app, to save time and money. For short distances and exploring the coast, rental bikes and e-scooters are also suitable, with stations found in many places. Taxi services are available and particularly useful for trips to more remote destinations or late at night; traditional ride-sharing services, however, are less common. The historic center, with its winding alleys like the Castello district, is excellent for exploring on foot, though one shouldn't underestimate the picturesque ascents, which reward with breathtaking views. A mix of walking and using public transport is often the most efficient way to experience the city and its surroundings, especially for tackling the hills.
