Many residents have Chinese roots, evident in the rows of shophouses, the shrines, and especially the cuisine.In Thailand, the city is known for its breakfast: From early morning, dim sum eateries open, featuring Mu Yang, grilled pork with crispy skin. Those who want to try this must get up early.For travelers, Trang is primarily a transit hub. The city lies on a branch line of the Southern Railway, which continues to Kantang, and has an airport. From the coastal piers, boats depart for the provincial islands, including Koh Mook with the Tham Morakot cave, Koh Ngai, and Koh Kradan.The island season runs approximately from November to April. The city itself functions year-round.

    1Trang Clock Tower

    The Clock Tower stands on a central roundabout, serving as a downtown landmark. From here, walk the shopping streets with their old shophouses. It lights up at night. While unspectacular as a structure, it is the city's most common reference point for directions.

    2Trang Railway Station

    Station on the branch line of the Southern Railway, which opened in 1913 and continues to Kantang. The current building dates from 1969. Night trains from Bangkok arrive in the morning, making the station the starting point for many to the islands. The street in front of the station is lined with Sino-Portuguese shophouses.

    3Khao Kob Cave (Tam Le Khao Kob)

    A cave system north of the city, navigated by punt along an underground waterway. The tour leads through chambers adorned with stalactites and at several points passes under very low rock overhangs, where all passengers must lie flat in the boat. Anyone with claustrophobia should consider this beforehand. The punts are operated by local boatmen; in case of high water levels during the rainy season, operations may be cancelled.

    4Trang Night Market

    The central night market is the easiest way to eat your way through the province's cuisine. Besides the usual food stalls, you'll find Trang specialties here, especially Mu Yang, the charcoal-grilled crispy pork traditionally eaten for breakfast in the city. You'll also find seafood, fruit, and desserts. The clientele is predominantly local, and prices are accordingly.

    Lay Trang Dim Sum (เลตรังติ่มซำ)

    Dim Sum spot in the center, one of the places where Trang eats his breakfast. The steamed baskets are paid at the table, along with Mu Yang, the city's crispy pork, and coffee from a cloth filter. It's busiest early in the morning; by midday most items are sold out.

    Ruan Thai Dim Sum (เรือนไทย ติ่มซำ)

    Second well-known Dim Sum spot downtown, with a broader menu than the breakfast-only eateries: alongside the steamed baskets, you'll find noodle soups and other Southern Thai dishes. Trang's Dim Sum culture stems from Chinese immigration, which arrived with the rubber trade. A tip: come early.

    Go Bhee Roasted Pork (ร้านหมูย่างโกบี้)

    A Mu Yang specialist, serving the charcoal-grilled crispy pork for which Trang is nationally renowned. Sold by weight, often for takeout; the product is usually best in the morning and sells out sometime during the day. In Trang, this dish is for breakfast, not dinner.

    Phuket Coffee (ภูเก็ตคอฟฟี่)

    Old coffee shop in the center, where coffee is still brewed through a cloth sock filter and served with condensed milk. It also offers toast, eggs, and pastries. The decor is visibly from an earlier era; guests are predominantly locals. Such Kopitiam establishments are the gastronomic heritage of the Chinese merchants who shaped the rubber trade.

    Food and Drink

    Trang is known as a food city in Thailand, due to its Chinese-Thai heritage: Hokkien families arrived via Kantang port, bringing Dim Sum, roasted pork, and coffee shop culture. The day starts early here — Dim Sum kitchens and Kopi-Shops open at dawn and are busiest in the morning, many closing again at midday. In the evenings, dining shifts to the markets and street food stalls.Unlike the coastal beaches, Trang cooks for locals, not for visitors: menus are often only in Thai, but they're happy to point and explain. Besides the Chinese-influenced side, there's the Southern Thai with very spicy curries.

    Moo Yang Trang

    The dish the city is known for: spit-roasted pork with crispy, lacquered skin and savory marinated meat. Sold in slices in the mornings, often with Dim Sum or as an accompaniment to rice porridge.

    Dim Sum

    Trang has its own Dim Sum tradition: steamed baskets with dumplings, spareribs, chicken feet, and fish balls, which are selected at the table from rolling carts. Served for breakfast, with tea.

    Kopi and Cha

    In old coffee houses, coffee is filtered through cloth filters and sweetened with condensed milk; tea with milk is also served. The shops are simply furnished and a morning meeting point for the neighborhood.

    Khanom Jeen with Southern Thai Curries

    Fermented rice noodles, topped with various curries, and a self-serve basket of raw herbs and vegetables. One of the market's cheapest meals.

    Kaeng Tai Pla and Gaeng Som

    The spicy curries of the Andaman Provinces: the dark Kaeng Tai Pla made from fermented fish offal with bamboo, and the sour, tamarind-based Gaeng Som with fish. Both are noticeably stronger than in Central Thailand.

    Trang Cakes and Pastries

    In the city, a simple, airy, egg-flavored cake is baked, sold as a souvenir from Trang. Additionally, Chinese-influenced pastries come from the old town's bakeries.

    History and Culture

    Trang's prosperity is tied to rubber. Phraya Ratsadanupradit, Trang's governor from 1890, is credited with bringing the rubber tree to Thailand. In nearby Kantang stands the country's first rubber tree, and his former residence is now a museum (Tue-Sun 9 am to 4 pm, free admission).Kantang was then the provincial port and a trading hub for spices, textiles, and rubber. In 1913, the railway reached the town; Kantang's wooden train station remains the line's terminus to this day. With trade came many Chinese immigrants, whose cuisine still influences Trang today.

    Rail: Trang is located on the southern railway line branch to Kantang. Overnight trains connect the city with Bangkok (Krung Thep Aphiwat Station).Flight: Trang Airport is located south of the city, with domestic flights to Bangkok.Islands: Minibuses and combination tickets will take you to Pak Meng and Kuantungku Piers, from where boats depart for Koh Mook, Koh Kradan, and Koh Ngai.In the city, use Tuk-Tuks or motorcycle taxis; confirm the fare before starting.     Koh Kradan

    Koh Kradan is a small island located about 10 kilometers off the coast of Trang province. Most of it belongs to Hat Chao Mai National Park. There is no village and no roads, just a handful of accommodations behind the beach and paths through the forest. In 2023, the British website World Beach Guide named Koh Kradan the best beach in the world.The main beach is approximately 2 kilometers long and lies on the east side. You can watch the sunrise from here, and the sunset from the small bay Ao Chong Lom on the west. Directly in front of the main beach begins a coral reef that you can snorkel without a boat.There are no ATMs or shops; meals are eaten in the restaurants of the accommodations. Bring cash from the mainland. The island is on the island-hopping route between Koh Ngai, Koh Mook, and Koh Libong; the Tham Morakot cave on Koh Mook can be easily combined. The season runs approximately from November to April, outside of which many businesses close.
    Koh Lanta

    Koh Lanta

    Koh Lanta, part of Krabi Province, is larger and more tranquil than most Andaman Sea islands. Its main island, Lanta Yai, is elongated: beaches line the west coast, forested hills rise inland, and a single main road connects north and south.The beaches vary distinctly. In the north lie Klong Dao and Phra Ae, featuring shallow water and the densest infrastructure. Further south, Klong Khong, Klong Nin, and Kantiang Bay become quieter and rockier. The Mu Ko Lanta National Park, complete with a lighthouse, hiking trail, and macaques, adjoins the southern tip.On the east coast lies Lanta Old Town, a village of stilt houses built over the water, where the island's Chinese-Muslim trading history is evident; nearby live families of the Urak Lawoi, the original sea nomads. The island is reached by ferry from Krabi and Phuket, and via a land connection over Koh Lanta Noi. The season runs from November to April; during the rainy season, many accommodations and restaurants close.

    Koh Phi Phi Islands

    The Phi Phi Islands are located between Phuket and Krabi. The largest are the inhabited Phi Phi Don and the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh, both part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Limestone cliffs drop almost vertically into the sea here, with narrow sandy coves nestled between them.All ferries reach Phi Phi Don at Tonsai Pier. The village, situated on a flat land bridge between two bays, is car-free; you travel on foot or by longtail boat. From the village, steps lead to viewpoints above the double bay; quieter beaches like Long Beach are located further southeast.On Phi Phi Leh lies Maya Bay, which was closed for years due to overuse and is now accessible with restrictions: swimming in the bay is prohibited, and it remains closed every year from August to September. In the evenings, nightlife centers on Loh Dalum Bay, featuring beach bars and fire shows. High season runs from November to April.
    Krabi

    Krabi

    Krabi Town is the administrative hub of the province and, for many travelers, primarily the gateway to the islands of the Andaman Sea. The town is situated on the Krabi River amidst mangroves and limestone cliffs, revealing authentic Thai daily life that the surrounding beach resorts rarely offer, most vividly at its night markets. Staying here for a night or two offers more affordable accommodation, easy access to Wat Tham Suea and the mangrove canals, and a convenient base for excursions to Ao Nang, Railay, and the islands.
    Railay Beach

    Railay Beach

    Railay is a peninsula in Krabi Province, between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, with steep limestone cliffs cutting it off from the mainland. No road leads here: you arrive by longtail boat from Ao Nang (around 15 minutes) or from the Krabi coast; departures depend on wind and sea conditions.The peninsula has several sides: Railay West (wide sandy beach, promenade, boat pier), Railay East (mangrove bay, not for swimming, but cheaper accommodation), and Phra Nang Beach (south, under overhanging rocks, famous cave shrine). North of this is Tonsai, the climbers' and backpackers' quarter.Railay is one of Asia's most renowned sport climbing areas, boasting over 700 bolted routes. Local schools rent equipment and offer courses for beginners.A steep, rope-secured path leads to the viewpoint and the Sa Phra Nang lagoon; it's slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes are required. Macaques live on the beaches, deliberately grabbing bags and edibles.
