Papingo consists of the two stone villages of Megalo and Mikro Papingo at the foot of the Astraka rock faces in the Vikos-Aoos National Park. From here, hiking trails lead up into the Tymfi Massif, and between the villages are the rock pools of Ovires.

Two Villages Beneath AstrakaPapingo comprises Megalo Papingo and the smaller Mikro Papingo, together home to just over 200 people at an altitude of around 950 metres. Above the villages rise the limestone walls of Astraka, a summit in the Tymfi Massif. Both villages lie within the Vikos-Aoos National Park.What to ExpectBetween the two villages lie the Ovires, natural rock pools carved by the Rogkovos stream into the limestone. From Mikro Papingo, you can hike up to the Astraka Hut in about three hours; from there, it's another roughly one and a half hours to Drakolimni mountain lake. Papingo is also a possible endpoint for the hike through the Vikos Gorge.

Ovires of Rogkovos

The Ovires are natural rock pools between Megalo and Mikro Papingo. Over a long period, the Rogkovos stream has washed them into the limestone, where water collects in round, smoothly polished hollows. They lie along the road between the two villages and can be easily incorporated into a stroll from one village to the other.

Astraka Cabin

The mountain hut lies at 1,950 meters below the Astraka summit. From Mikro Papingo, the hike takes about three hours, passing several springs. The hut provides 52 beds and is open daily during summer. It serves as the usual base for the trek to Drakolimni.

Drakolimni of Tymfi

This small mountain lake, at 2,050m in the Tymfi Massif, is about 90 minutes from Astraka Hut. It's barely five meters deep, with clear water, home to the rare alpine newt. Legend says a dragon dwelled here, feuding with another from Smolikas Lake.

Papingo is one of the endpoints of the hike through the Vikos Gorge, which begins in Monodendri. Many tackle it in the reverse direction or just a section of it.
