Austria's capital on the Danube was for centuries the residence of the Habsburgs. Around St. Stephen's Cathedral are the Hofburg, State Opera and the Ringstrasse; to the west is Schönbrunn Palace, and in the Prater, the Giant Ferris Wheel spins. Coffeehouse culture and Heurige are part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage.

In the 3rd district are the two baroque Belvedere Palaces, built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The Upper Belvedere houses the world's largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, including "The Kiss," and tram line D stops right outside.

    Döbling & Grinzing

To the north of the city lie the vineyards of the 19th district. In Grinzing and Heiligenstadt, Heurige and Buschenschanken serve wine from their own cultivation, especially Grüner Veltliner and Wiener Gemischter Satz. Beethoven once lived at the Heuriger Mayer am Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt.

    Wieden & Naschmarkt

South of the Ring Road are the St. Charles Church and the Wien Museum on Karlsplatz. Along the Wiental, the Naschmarkt extends with market stalls and eateries; Saturdays see a flea market too.
