    Turquoise Bay

    Turquoise Bay in Cape Range National Park is one of Australia's most beautiful beaches. With Drift Snorkelling, you let the current carry you over the reef. The current can become strong at the southern tip, so get out in time and never swim alone.

    The Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, perched on a hill at the northern tip of the peninsula, is the most popular spot for sunset. From June to October, you can often spot humpback whales from here.

    The approximately three-kilometer loop trail in the Mandu Mandu Gorge leads through a dry riverbed and over the gorge rim, with views out to the reef. Go early in the morning; it gets very hot in summer.

    Whale sharks visit Ningaloo Reef, March-July. Boats depart mostly from Exmouth Marina; light aircraft locate animals first. You'll snorkel beside them in small groups, with distance rules. Book early; tours are expensive.

    Yardie Creek

    5Yardie Creek

    At the southern end of the sealed road through Cape Range National Park, Yardie Creek flows into the sea between red rock walls. Short hiking trail along the gorge rim and boat tours; Black-footed rock-wallabies often sit on the rocks.

    In Exmouth there is a brewery, several cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets. The selection is good for such a remote location.

    Exmouth Prawns

    Shrimp are caught in Exmouth Gulf, and you'll find them fresh on many menus in town.

    Heritage

    The coast is the land of the Baiyungu, Thalanyji, and Yinigudura. 1618, a Dutch ship sighted the cape; during WWII, the Allies used Exmouth Gulf as a submarine base. 1967, the US Navy built the Harold E. Holt radio station, and the town was established for its personnel. The transmission masts still stand north of the town today. 2011, the Ningaloo Coast became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Travelling in Exmouth

    Learmonth Airport is about 35 kilometers south, with flights from Perth. By car, it's around 1,250 kilometers from Perth.You'll need a car for Cape Range National Park; the road to Yardie Creek is sealed. Bring water, food, and sun protection, as there are no shops in the park. Campsites in the park must be pre-booked online during peak season.

    Coral Bay

    Coral Bay is a tiny place on the southern Ningaloo Reef, around 1,100 km north of Perth. The reef starts directly at the beach, and from here, boats go to manta rays and whale sharks.

    Karijini NP

    Karijini National Park in the Pilbara is one of Australia's most impressive parks: narrow red gorges, cutting up to 100 metres deep into the Hamersley Plateau, with waterfalls and swimming holes at their base.

    Shark Bay

    Shark Bay on the West Coast has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991: a vast, shallow bay with seagrass meadows, dugongs, the dolphins of Monkey Mia, stromatolites, and a shell beach. A good eight hours' drive north of Perth.

    Kalbarri National Park, about six hours north of Perth, combines two landscapes: red sandstone gorges along the Murchison River inland and high cliffs on the Indian Ocean. The town of Kalbarri at the river mouth is the starting point.

    Broome on Roebuck Bay, with 14,000 residents, is the Kimberley's largest town and western gateway. The town grew from pearl fishing; Chinatown, with tin buildings, pearl shops, and the Sun Pictures open-air cinema, tells the story.Cable Beach, red cliffs at Gantheaume Point, and a tidal range of up to 10 m characterize the surroundings. The dry season, May to October, is high season.
