    1Gammelstads Kyrkstad

    Gammelstads Kyrkstad, about ten kilometers upstream from Luleå, is Northern Scandinavia's best-preserved church town and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. At its heart stands the Nederluleå kyrka from 1492, the largest late-medieval stone church in Northern Sweden. Surrounding it are 424 wooden houses, where churchgoers from the surrounding area stayed overnight on Sundays and holidays. Luleå was founded here in the 1620s, before the city moved to the coast in 1649.

    3Luleå Schärengarten

    The Luleå Archipelago is part of the Bothnian Archipelago and is considered the world's largest brackish water archipelago. It comprises 1,312 islands. In summer, you can reach them by boat, dock at guest harbours, or camp on the islands. In winter, many kilometres of ice roads are cleared, allowing you to drive between the islands by car.

    From Gammelstad to the CoastLuleå was founded in the 1620s at what is now Gammelstad. Because post-glacial land uplift made the harbour too shallow, the town moved closer to the coast in 1649.
