Jokkmokk

The Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum in Jokkmokk, is a central place to understand Sami culture and the nature of the northern Swedish mountains. As a national center, it preserves and conveys the rich history and way of life of the indigenous Sápmi population. Here you'll find comprehensive permanent exhibitions documenting the development of Sami society over centuries. The exhibits range from traditional clothing, the kolt, and delicate handicrafts, known as duodji, to tools essential for reindeer herding and daily life. The Jokkmokks gamla kyrka is an octagonal wooden church and a testament to the early church history in Lappland. The first church in Jokkmokk was completed in 1607; as it became too small, a new building was constructed and consecrated in 1753. This burned down completely in 1972 and was reconstructed according to the 18th-century building plans and re-consecrated in 1976. The interior is modern. The church and church square were long the focal point of the market where Sámi and traders met.Tip: The parish churches are generally open during the day in summer; on Saturdays at 6 PM, a devotion is held here. The Skabram Turism Gårdsmejeri is a farm dairy in the hamlet of Skabram, west of Jokkmokk. Here you can gain insight into rural food production in the High North and purchase farm products. Offerings and opening hours vary seasonally; please check before visiting.
