Orvieto majestically perches on a tufa rock and boasts a rich history deeply rooted in Etruscan civilization. As an important Etruscan center, the city flourished before falling under Roman rule. In the Middle Ages, Orvieto evolved into a powerful free commune, gaining prominence through its strategic location and agricultural productivity.The city bears witness to various eras, with the Orvieto Cathedral standing out as an exceptional example of Gothic architecture. Its façade, richly adorned with mosaics and sculptures, is a masterpiece of Italian art history. Beneath the city lies a fascinating network of caves and tunnels, the “Orvieto Sotterranea”, created by the Etruscans and expanded over centuries. The Pozzo di San Patrizio, an imposing 16th-century well, also testifies to impressive engineering. Culturally, the city is still shaped by its deep connection to its medieval roots, reflected, for example, in the annual Corpus Christi procession.

The picturesque city of Orvieto, majestically perched on a tufa cliff, is a paradise for pedestrians; its historic center is compact, traffic-calmed, and wonderful to explore. Crucial access to the old town is conveniently provided by the historic funicular (Funicolare) from the valley station, which replaces a subway or tram connection. Once at the top, smaller buses connect the Funicolare terminal with various points within the old town; tickets are available at stations or tobacco shops, and combined tickets are often advantageous. For longer distances, taxis are available, but bicycles or e-scooters are less recommended in the historic center due to its topography and cobblestones, while ride-sharing plays no role here. Our tip: Park at the foot of the cliff and use the Funicolare for a stress-free journey into the heart of Orvieto.
