San Gimignano

San Gimignano, often called "medieval Manhattan," owes its unique preservation to a complex history. The town developed in the early Middle Ages along the Via Francigena, an important pilgrimage and trade route. It experienced its heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries as an independent commune, shaped by wealthy families who demonstrated their power by building imposing family towers.Of the original more than 70 towers, 14 remain today, shaping the cityscape and representing an unparalleled testament to medieval urban planning. The architectural blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements is clearly visible in the palazzi and churches such as the Collegiata (Duomo). The Black Death and the subsequent subjugation to Florence in 1353 led to an economic decline, which paradoxically contributed to the preservation of the medieval townscape, as little new construction occurred.Today, San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known not only for its towers but also for its fresco art and as a living example of a well-preserved medieval town. San Gimignano is known for being pedestrian-friendly. Its historic core is largely a traffic-restricted zone (ZTL), ideal for exploring on foot, making comfortable shoes essential.San Gimignano has no metro or tram. Getting to and around the region is mainly by bus. Local bus lines connect San Gimignano with cities like Siena and Florence. Bus tickets are best purchased in advance at tobacco shops (Tabaccherie) or bus stations; digital apps like “at-bus” provide timetable information, but ticket purchase is often still physical.Due to the hilly topography, e-bikes are a popular option for excursions into the picturesque surroundings, while conventional bicycles or e-scooters are less practical in the steep town center. Taxis are available but not numerous and should be pre-booked; ride-sharing services are uncommon here.For car travelers, several guarded parking lots are available outside the historic walls, such as P1 Giubileo, from which short walks lead directly into the town's heart. The town itself is best explored on foot to fully absorb its medieval atmosphere.
