The Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata are a centuries-old pilgrimage site for Shugendō practice. The three sacred mountains, Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono, symbolize birth, death, and rebirth. On Mount Haguro, a climb of 2,446 stone steps leads through ancient cedars to the Five-story Pagoda. Mount Gassan is only accessible in summer. At the mystical Mount Yudono, you experience a unique purification; photography is prohibited here. Visit from July to September, when all mountains are accessible, and consider an overnight stay in a traditional Shukubo.
