The small town of Tequila lies about 60 km northwest of Guadalajara at the foot of the extinct volcano of the same name. Here, the major distilleries of José Cuervo and Sauza stand directly on the main square, with blue agave fields stretching to the town's edge all around. The Agave Landscape with its ancient distilleries was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2006, and since 2003, the town has held the title of Pueblo Mágico.

Attraction
Plaza Principal with Kiosk
The music pavilion stands on Tequila's main square, surrounded by the parish church, arcades with shops, and the entrances to the major distilleries. In the evening, locals and visitors gather here.
Museum
Museo Nacional del Tequila (MUNAT)
The small museum opened in 2000 in the former Casa de Cultura. It explains the cultivation, harvesting, and production of agave spirit and its history in the region.

St. James the Apostle Parish
The parish church on Calle Sixto Gorjón borders Tequila's main square. Its simple stone facade, together with the kiosk, forms the heart of the old town.

Distillery La Rojeña (José Cuervo)
The José Cuervo distillery, founded in 1795, is located in the heart of the town, opposite the main square. On tours, you'll see the ovens where the agave hearts are cooked, the stills and the barrel warehouses; finally, there's a tasting.

The Tequilera Sauza Visitor Center is part of La Perseverancia Distillery, founded by Cenobio Sauza in 1873. The grounds also feature Quinta Sauza, an old country house with a garden, where tours begin.

Tequila blanco and reposado
Blanco comes unaged to the bottle; reposado matures for at least two months in a wooden barrel. At tastings, you usually try both.

Slow-cooked goat or beef in a spicy broth, often enjoyed with tequila for breakfast.
Agave, Distilleries, World Heritage
The World Heritage SiteSince 2006, UNESCO has listed the "Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila" as a World Heritage site. Protected are the fields between the Tequila volcano and the valley of the Río Grande de Santiago, historic distilleries and haciendas, as well as traces of the Teuchitlán culture from 200 to 900 AD. Traveling in Tequila
You explore the center on foot; all major distilleries are just a few minutes' walk from the main square. For excursions into the agave fields, book a guided tour or take a taxi.From Guadalajara, you can reach Tequila via toll highway 15D in about an hour. The free country road via El Arenal and Amatitán takes up to an hour and a half. If you plan to sample Tequila, it's best to leave your car and come by bus or a guided tour.
