Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas, boasts a rich, though often overshadowed, history. Originally settled by the Zoque Indians, whose culture continues to shape the region to this day, it was founded during the colonial era as "San Marcos Tuxtla" and later developed into the state's administrative center.The city's architectural landscape reflects this development, with few preserved colonial buildings having given way to a greater presence of modern structures. A striking example is the San Marcos Cathedral, which, although built on historical foundations, features a distinctly modern appearance and is known for its carillon with moving apostle figures. Culturally, Zoque traditions persist in customs and festivals, even though Tuxtla today is primarily an administrative and economic hub. The city is also renowned for its Marimba music, which holds a firm place in the local identity and can be heard throughout many public spaces.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez has neither a subway nor a tram system. Public transport is instead based on a well-developed bus network and the popular Colectivos, shared taxis that serve fixed routes at affordable prices.
