    Lake, Power Plant and Protest

    Lake, Power Station, and ProtestManapōuri is commonly interpreted as 'sorrowful heart', though its exact origin is disputed. In the 1960s, an underground hydroelectric power station was constructed at West Arm. Plans to raise the lake level by up to 30 metres for this purpose sparked the 'Save Manapouri' campaign, one of New Zealand's first major environmental movements. The government ultimately abandoned the raising.

    Getting ThereFrom Te Anau, it's about a 20-minute drive, or cycle via the Lake2Lake Trail. Doubtful Sound tours depart from Pearl Harbour in town; many operators pick guests up in Te Anau.
