The Romans founded Pax Julia here, an important administrative center. The Visigoths and Moors followed; after the Christian Reconquista, the present-day castle was built. In the Convento da Conceição lived the nun Mariana Alcoforado, to whom the famous 17th-century "Portuguese Letters" are attributed.Beja lies in the heartland of Cante Alentejano, the polyphonic choir singing that has been an intangible UNESCO Cultural Heritage since 2014. In the taverns, you'll find the region's typical cuisine, often featuring black pig, bread, and herbs.

Explore the old town on foot. Beja has a train station with connections to Lisbon, usually with a change, and long-distance buses run to Lisbon and the Algarve. For the surrounding villages, you need a car.
