    South Gate and City Wall

    Through this gate, you enter the walled village. Along parts of the wall, you can look across the plain to Alqueva Lake. At the south end lies the castle with its keep.

    Spirit

    After its reconquest in the 12th century, Monsaraz was an important border fortress. The castle, the Mother Church Nossa Senhora da Lagoa, and the pillory in the main square date back to this long border history. Numerous menhirs are found in the surrounding area. In the neighboring village of São Pedro do Corval, many potteries are still active.

    Traveling

    The village is small and best explored on foot; its cobblestones are uneven. Without a car, Monsaraz is hard to reach; the next larger towns are Reguengos de Monsaraz and Évora, about an hour away.
