    The fortress on Monte da Graça, north of the city, was built from 1763 under the Count of Schaumburg-Lippe. With its staggered walls and the central round commander's house, it is considered one of the most impressive fortresses of its era. Admission only during set hours; check beforehand.

    Culture

    As a border fortress against Spain, Elvas was fought over for centuries. The present-day bastions were built primarily after 1640, during the Restoration War, following the plans of the Jesuit João Pascasio Cosmander. In the 18th century, the Forte da Graça was added under the Count of Schaumburg-Lippe. Elvas is also known for its candied plums, the Ameixas d'Elvas, which bear a Protected Designation of Origin.

    Within the walls, walking is best; the cobblestones are uneven and it's partly uphill. Long-distance buses connect Elvas with Lisbon and Évora. For Forte da Graça and trips to Badajoz or Estremoz, a car is practical.
