    Golden limestone cliffs, arches, and grottoes surround a small lighthouse, a good 2 km south of the Old Town. From above, stairs lead to the water, where small boats navigate through the rocks. The light is most beautiful in the early morning and at sunset.

    Small cove between high cliffs, accessible via stairs. One of the most famous beaches in the Algarve and accordingly crowded in summer.

    From the outside unassuming, inside almost entirely furnished with gilded wood carvings and azulejos. The church is accessed via the attached city museum.

    In this building on the main square, enslaved Africans were sold from the 15th century onwards. Lagos is considered the starting point of the European slave trade. Today, a small museum commemorates this history.

    Remains of the old Governor's Castle at the edge of the old town, with a Manueline window. Long sections of the city wall still enclose the center today.

    Culture

    Under Henry the Navigator, Lagos was an important port for the Portuguese voyages of discovery. From 1444, enslaved Africans were sold here, now remembered by the Museum in the Mercado de Escravos. The 1755 earthquake destroyed large parts of the city. In restaurants, fish and seafood dominate, complemented by almond and fig sweets from the Algarve.

    Traveling

    The old town is small and car-free in many alleys. Lagos is the terminus of the Algarve Railway, trains run towards Portimão and Faro. Long-distance coaches connect to Lisbon. You can walk to the bays and Ponta da Piedade along the cliffs, or take the city bus. A car is convenient for Sagres and the West Coast.
