    The Fjäderholmarna are a small group of islands at the start of the Stockholm archipelago, about 20 minutes by boat from the city center. They belong to the municipality of Lidingö and to the Royal National City Park. On the most visited island, Stora Fjäderholmen, you will find craft studios, small shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as an open-air exhibition of traditional archipelago boats. The islands are a good choice for a first impression of the archipelago without a long journey. The visiting season runs from May to mid-September.

    On Stora Fjäderholmen, artisans have set up shop in the old wooden buildings. In the studios and shops, you'll find handcrafted pieces, which you can often buy directly from the makers. The atmosphere is relaxed and perfect for browsing. Our tip: Visit during the season from May to mid-September, when the boats run daily and the workshops are open. Plan enough time for the various studios and a stroll around the island.

    Culture and History on Fjäderholmarna

    Trade, Inn, and ShipyardAlready in the 17th century, Stora Fjäderholmen had an inn. Merchants from the city rowed here to buy fish and livestock from the archipelago residents. Between 1850 and 1890, a shipyard repaired boats and barges, and in the early 20th century, Restaurant Bellevue attracted middle-class day-trippers.Military Era and OpeningIn 1918, the state took over the islands, with the Navy using them as an ammunition depot, and in 1940, a landing ban was imposed. After the war, the facilities were gradually abandoned. In 1982, the Royal Djurgården Administration took over the islands, redeveloping them into a destination for excursions, dining, and handicrafts.TodayThe traditional wooden buildings house studios, shops, and eateries. An open-air exhibition showcases traditional archipelago boats, thus preserving the maritime heritage.

    Getting There by BoatFjäderholmarna can only be reached by boat. The Fjäderholmslinjen operates seasonally from May to mid-September, departing from Slussen and Strömkajen. The journey takes around 20 minutes. For current departure times, please check with the operator.To the PiersYou can reach Slussen and Strömkajen using Stockholm's public transport (SL). Tickets can be purchased via the SL-App, at ticket machines, or contactless with a bank card.On the IslandStora Fjäderholmen is small and car-free; all paths are covered on foot. During peak season, boats are very busy on sunny days, so plan for some buffer time.

    The island of Djurgården in Stockholm, once a royal hunting ground, is now a large green space and one of the city's most important cultural centers. Highlights include the Vasa Museum, home to the almost completely preserved 17th-century warship, and the open-air museum Skansen. Also on Djurgården are the Nordic Museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, the former residence of the painting prince, with its park. You can reach the island by ferry from Slussen or by tram line 7. Spring and autumn are ideal for a relaxed exploration of the parks and museums, when there are fewer visitors.

    Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town, is located on the island of Stadsholmen and represents the city's medieval heart. Here you'll discover narrow cobblestone streets, colorful merchant houses, and historic squares that define the urban landscape. The Royal Palace, Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral), and the Nobel Museum on central Stortorget are key attractions. Particularly characteristic are the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, as well as the many small boutiques and traditional cafés. Founded in the 13th century, the district preserves its charm with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. To experience the special atmosphere undisturbed, a visit in the early morning hours is recommended. Also, plan time for a traditional Fika in one of the cozy cafés.
