    1Mariaberget and Monteliusvägen

    The Monteliusvägen is a 416-metre-long walking path on the slope of Mariaberget above Söder Mälarstrand. It was opened in August 1998 and is named after the archaeologist Oscar Montelius. From here, you get a panoramic view over the Riddarfjärden of Kungsholmen, Riddarholmen and Gamla Stan.

    Fotografiska is a museum of contemporary photography located on Stadsgården, on Södermalm's north bank. It opened in 2010 with an exhibition by Annie Leibovitz. The building, a 1906 Art Nouveau customs house designed by Ferdinand Boberg, is a protected historic landmark. The exhibitions change several times a year.

    The Katarina kyrka in Södermalm was built between 1656 and 1695. After a fire in 1723, it was rebuilt with a larger octagonal tower. On May 17, 1990, it burned down again almost to its outer walls and was reopened in 1995. Among those buried in the churchyard are politician Anna Lindh and singer-songwriter Cornelis Vreeswijk.

    History and Culture

    From Farmland to Trendy DistrictUntil the 19th century, Södermalm primarily served as farmland for Stockholm. From 1860, with the railway, the island turned into an industrial area providing housing for worker families. As offices replaced factories in the 20th century, its transformation began, with parts of Söder now among the city's most sought-after residential areas.Churches and MuseumsThe Katarina kyrka was built from 1656 to 1695, faithfully reconstructed after a fire in May 1990, and reopened in 1995.The Maria Magdalena kyrka was consecrated in 1634; the 1902 Sofia kyrka crowns a hill above Vita Bergen Park.The City Museum, located in the former Southern Town Hall from the 1660s, has showcased Stockholm's history since 1942. Fotografiska, since 2010, occupies a 1906 industrial building on Stadsgårdshamnen.Millennium and Söder HeightsStieg Larsson's Millennium series brought international fame, with many book and film settings located on Södermalm. Especially in the northern heights, Söders höjder, numerous 18th and 19th-century buildings are preserved.

    Public TransportSlussen, on the northern edge of the island, is the main interchange point for the metro and buses, connecting Södermalm with Gamla stan.Other metro stations include Mariatorget, Zinkensdamm, Medborgarplatsen, and Skanstull.Commuter trains stop at Stockholms södra station; Hammarby Sjöstad is also connected by small passenger ferries.On FootMost destinations can be reached on foot; expect stairs and inclines on the northern heights.Cross the Västerbron for beautiful views over to Kungsholmen.

    Gamla Stan

    Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town, is located on the island of Stadsholmen and represents the city's medieval heart. Here you'll discover narrow cobblestone streets, colorful merchant houses, and historic squares that define the urban landscape. The Royal Palace, Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral), and the Nobel Museum on central Stortorget are key attractions. Particularly characteristic are the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, as well as the many small boutiques and traditional cafés. Founded in the 13th century, the district preserves its charm with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. To experience the special atmosphere undisturbed, a visit in the early morning hours is recommended. Also, plan time for a traditional Fika in one of the cozy cafés.

    Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, stretches across 14 islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea, and is often called the "Venice of the North". The city combines the medieval alleyways of Gamla Stan with modern architecture, a rich museum landscape on Djurgården, and plenty of greenery by the water. Directly in front of the city, the archipelago begins, which can be easily explored by ferry as a day trip.

    The island of Djurgården in Stockholm, once a royal hunting ground, is now a large green space and one of the city's most important cultural centers. Highlights include the Vasa Museum, home to the almost completely preserved 17th-century warship, and the open-air museum Skansen. Also on Djurgården are the Nordic Museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, the former residence of the painting prince, with its park. You can reach the island by ferry from Slussen or by tram line 7. Spring and autumn are ideal for a relaxed exploration of the parks and museums, when there are fewer visitors.

    Norrmalm is Stockholm's central business district. Around Sergels torg, created during Nedre Norrmalm's 20th-century redesign, are shopping streets, department stores, restaurants, and cultural institutions. The district also includes Kungsträdgården Park.
    Vasastan

    Vasastan

    Vasastan is a sought-after residential district north of the city center, built mostly between the 1880s and 1920s. Besides Neo-Renaissance apartment buildings, Art Nouveau buildings, especially in Birkastaden, and National Romantic blocks shape the scene. Parks such as Vasaparken and Observatorielunden and numerous cafés make the district a quiet counterpoint to the center.
