    Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town, is located on the island of Stadsholmen and represents the city's medieval heart. Here you'll discover narrow cobblestone streets, colorful merchant houses, and historic squares that define the urban landscape. The Royal Palace, Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral), and the Nobel Museum on central Stortorget are key attractions. Particularly characteristic are the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, as well as the many small boutiques and traditional cafés. Founded in the 13th century, the district preserves its charm with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. To experience the special atmosphere undisturbed, a visit in the early morning hours is recommended. Also, plan time for a traditional Fika in one of the cozy cafés.

    1Stockholmer Schloss

    The Royal Palace of Stockholm, official residence of the Swedish monarch, is prominently located by the water in Gamla Stan. It was rebuilt in Baroque style following the fire of Tre Kronor Castle on May 7, 1697, based on plans by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, and was ready for occupancy in 1754. The Palace boasts approximately 1,430 rooms, about 660 of which have windows. You can visit the Royal Apartments, the Treasury with the Regalia, Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities, and the Tre Kronor Museum, which illustrates the original castle's history. The Changing of the Guard takes place in the outer courtyard, weekdays and Saturdays at 12:15 PM, and Sundays and public holidays at 1:15 PM. In summer, on selected days, it includes a mounted parade and military band. As times and locations may change, checking the current armed forces calendar is advisable. Our Tip: Visit the interiors in the morning, before the largest groups arrive. Slottsbacken offers a good perspective of the facade.

    Gamla Stan: Alleys, Stortorget, and Palace

    From Järntorget, you walk through Västerlånggatan and the narrow Mårten Trotzigs gränd to Stortorget with its gabled houses and the Nobel Museum. Afterwards, you visit Storkyrkan with the sculpture Saint George and the Dragon and the Royal Palace, finally heading to the waterfront street Skeppsbron.

    Culture and History of Gamla Stan

    Medieval RootsGamla Stan, Stockholm's historic heart, mainly consists of the island Stadsholmen, along with the small islands Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg. The city dates back to the 13th century, and its narrow network of alleyways largely follows the medieval street plan to this day.Squares and BuildingsThe district's architecture is characterized by colorful burgher houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, often built upon significantly older foundations.     On FootGamla Stan is best explored on foot. The narrow cobblestone streets are largely traffic-calmed, and the main attractions are only a few minutes' walk apart.Public TransportThe metro station Gamla stan is located right on the edge of the Old Town and is served by the red and green lines. You can buy single tickets in the SL-App, at a machine, or contactless with a bank card at the reader. For multiple journeys, period tickets are worthwhile, which are also valid on buses, trams, and commuter trains.Bicycles, Taxis, and CarsBicycles and e-scooters are not very practical in the Old Town due to the many pedestrians and stairs, but they are suitable for the waterfront promenades. Taxis are available, but rarely necessary for short distances within the quarter. With your own car, you'll hardly make progress; parking spaces are scarce and expensive.
