Vasa-Museum
The Vasa Museum on the island of Djurgården houses the world's only almost fully preserved 17th-century ship. The Vasa sank in 1628 on its maiden voyage in Stockholm Harbor and was only salvaged in 1961 after 333 years on the seabed. Here, you'll experience a unique testament to Swedish maritime history and shipbuilding artistry. The museum is built around the colossal ship, allowing you to view it from multiple levels, which provides a comprehensive impression of its sheer size. Numerous exhibitions shed light on life aboard, the ship's salvage, and 17th-century society. The preserved oak structure and intricate carvings are truly impressive. Our tip: To avoid the largest crowds, visiting right after opening or in the late afternoon hours is recommended. Note that the lighting conditions in the museum are subdued for conservation reasons, which can pose a challenge for photography.
