    Vasastan is a sought-after residential district north of the city center, built mostly between the 1880s and 1920s. Besides Neo-Renaissance apartment buildings, Art Nouveau buildings, especially in Birkastaden, and National Romantic blocks shape the scene. Parks such as Vasaparken and Observatorielunden and numerous cafés make the district a quiet counterpoint to the center.

    1Vasapark

    The Vasaparken is located between Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan in the heart of Vasastan. It was begun in 1898 and completed in 1908; during World War I, the city grew potatoes here. Astrid Lindgren lived in a house by the park; one corner is now called Astrid Lindgrens terrass. Among other things, the park features the statue Arbetaren by Gottfrid Larsson from 1917.

    The park Observatorielunden is situated on a hill in Vasastan near the City Library. At the top stands the old observatory of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which Carl Hårleman designed and which was built from 1748 to 1753. From the hill, you can look out over the rooftops of the city center.

    District Culture

    City Library and ChurchesThe City Library on Sveavägen was designed by Erik Gunnar Asplund; the 1928 building combines classical forms with early functionalism. In the round main hall, three tiers of bookshelves stretch all around the walls. The Neo-Baroque Gustaf Vasa kyrka from 1906 is one of the city's largest churches and is known for its concerts.Astrid LindgrenChildren's book author Astrid Lindgren lived in an apartment in Vasastan from 1941 until her death in 2002. Her apartment has been open to visitors since November 2015, by reservation only.Art and MuseumsBonniers konsthall has been showcasing Swedish and international contemporary art since 2005.The Sven-Harrys art museum opened in 2011 in a striking brass building.Carl Eldh's studio in Bellevuepark exhibits sculptures from the early 20th century.Several galleries have opened around Hudiksvallsgatan.

    Public TransportOdenplan is the main hub: The underground commuter train station from 2017 is equipped with contemporary art, plus metro and buses.Other metro stations in the district include Rådmansgatan and S:t Eriksplan.By Foot and CarMost destinations are reachable on foot; even the City in Norrmalm is not far.Parking is available, but it is expensive. A congestion charge applies when crossing the city border into Solna.Traffic is diverted around the construction sites in Hagastaden.

Directly in front of the city, the archipelago begins, which can be easily explored by ferry as a day trip.

    Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town, is located on the island of Stadsholmen and represents the city's medieval heart. Here you'll discover narrow cobblestone streets, colorful merchant houses, and historic squares that define the urban landscape. The Royal Palace, Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral), and the Nobel Museum on central Stortorget are key attractions. Particularly characteristic are the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, as well as the many small boutiques and traditional cafés. Founded in the 13th century, the district preserves its charm with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. To experience the special atmosphere undisturbed, a visit in the early morning hours is recommended. Also, plan time for a traditional Fika in one of the cozy cafés.

    Djurgården

    The island of Djurgården in Stockholm, once a royal hunting ground, is now a large green space and one of the city's most important cultural centers. Highlights include the Vasa Museum, home to the almost completely preserved 17th-century warship, and the open-air museum Skansen. Also on Djurgården are the Nordic Museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, the former residence of the painting prince, with its park. You can reach the island by ferry from Slussen or by tram line 7. Spring and autumn are ideal for a relaxed exploration of the parks and museums, when there are fewer visitors.

    Södermalm is known as the hub of Stockholm's alternative and creative scene. From the island's hills, you'll enjoy sweeping skyline views, plus independent boutiques, cafés, and a vibrant nightlife.
