Gran Canaria

At 1,949 meters, Pico de las Nieves is the island's second highest peak; the highest point, according to recent measurements, lies at the nearby Morro de la Agujerada. It owes its name to 17th-century snow pits where winter snow was collected and transported as ice to Las Palmas. It was therefore originally called Pico de los Pozos de la Nieve.

The approximately 80-meter-high rock monolith in the municipality of Tejeda serves as a landmark of Gran Canaria, its summit lying at about 1,813 meters. It is the erosion remnant of a volcanic pyroclastic flow from the Miocene and has been protected as a natural monument since 1994. Since 2019, it has belonged to the UNESCO World Heritage Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria.

The dune landscape in the south of the island is protected as a special nature reserve and covers approximately 400 hectares. It is the only system of its kind on Gran Canaria, and numerous birds rest at the Charca de Maspalomas lagoon. In the palm grove near the lagoon lives the Gran Canaria giant lizard.

This late 16th-century house stands in Las Palmas' historic Vegueta district. A part was once the Governor's House, allegedly visited by Columbus in 1492 on his first voyage to seek help for the Pinta's repairs. Since 1951, it has housed a museum on the history of the Canary Islands and their ties to America.

The cave in Gáldar, in the island's northwest, contains geometric wall paintings by the ancient Canarians and is among the Canary Islands' most significant sites. It was discovered in 1862 during fieldwork. Since 2006, a museum and archaeological park showcase the cave and the surrounding settlement's remains.
