    Highlands of the country's heart

The Free State, almost entirely on the Highveld, is one of South Africa's key agricultural regions with large maize and sunflower fields. Its provincial capital, Bloemfontein, is also home to the Supreme Court of Appeal. For travellers, the east is most interesting, with Maluti Mountains bordering Lesotho: the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, artist village Clarens, and San rock paintings.

    Traveling the Free State

The eastern Free State is well situated between Johannesburg and the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, making it ideal for a stopover. The roads are mostly paved, public transport for travellers is scarce, so you'll need a car.
