Belmonte is a small village on a hill in the Beira Interior, east of the Serra da Estrela. Pedro Álvares Cabral, who in 1500 became the first European to reach Brazil, was born here. Belmonte is also known for its Jewish community: descendants of forcibly baptised Jews secretly preserved their customs here for centuries and only openly professed their faith again in the 20th century.

Culture and History
After the forced baptism of Jews in Portugal in 1497, many families lived outwardly Catholic but secretly adhered to Jewish rites. In Belmonte, this tradition of the Crypto-Jews endured particularly long. It was only in 1917 that engineer Samuel Schwarz brought the community to public attention, and in 1996, the Bet Eliahu Synagogue was inaugurated.The Cabral family owned the castle of Belmonte; Pedro Álvares Cabral was born here around 1467.
