Stralsund has a population of almost 60,000 and is situated on the Strelasund, opposite the island of Rügen. Its Old Town island is almost entirely surrounded by water and can be easily explored on foot. At its heart is the Alter Markt, with the Town Hall and St. Nicholas' Church, while the Marienkirche tower rises in the south. The harbor is home to the Ozeaneum and the museum ship Gorch Fock I; from here, ferries depart for Hiddensee and Altefähr. The Rügendamm and Rügenbrücke bridges provide access to the island.
