    In Plasencia, two cathedrals stand directly side by side. The old cathedral (Santa María) combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, while the new cathedral (Asunción de la Virgen) is a late Gothic and Renaissance construction with Plateresque details, and remains unfinished. Their facades, the chancel, and the serene interior atmosphere tell stories from several centuries. Take your time to discover the differences between both structures, which merge into one another to form a unified ensemble.

    2Murallas y Acueducto de Plasencia

    The well-preserved medieval city walls of Plasencia bear witness to the city's defensive history. Stroll along the fortifications, discover city gates such as the Puerta de Trujillo, and enjoy views of the city and surroundings from elevated points. On the outskirts, you'll also find the aqueduct, which replaced an older medieval predecessor structure in the 16th century. Contrary to common belief, it is not a Roman structure.

    3Palacio del Marqués de Mirabel

    Immerse yourself in the noble history of Plasencia with a visit to the Palacio del Marqués de Mirabel. The palace stands on the site of 13th and 14th-century constructions by the Almaraz family and was redesigned in the 16th century in Renaissance style, where Gothic and Renaissance elements blend. Inside, you'll see a two-story patio with round arches, a Renaissance staircase with the Zúñiga coat of arms, halls with fireplaces, the kitchen, and the chapel. One wing houses a hunting museum (Museo de Caza). It is best to inquire about visiting hours beforehand.

    The Plaza Mayor de Plasencia is the historical and social centre of the city. Arcades offer shade and invite you to linger; the town hall, the Casa Consistorial, also stands on the square. On the first Tuesday in August, the square fills with stalls selling regional products during the traditional Martes Mayor. Our Tip: In the late afternoon, as cafés and restaurants get livelier, you can observe the local hustle and bustle. For a quieter photo of the architecture, an early morning visit is recommended.
