    Nåttarö, located in the southern Stockholm archipelago, is about 30 boat minutes from Nynäshamn and is protected as a nature reserve. The island is almost entirely covered by pine forest, and on the east side, Stora Sand offers one of the archipelago's longest sandy beaches with large dunes. Additionally, there are bathing rocks, car-free gravel paths, and trails for walks.

    Stora Sand

    Stora Sand on the east side of Nåttarö is considered the largest sandy beach in the Stockholm archipelago and is lined with large dunes. Here you can swim, sunbathe, or walk along the shore. On the way from the boat dock, you'll pass the Drottninggrottan cave.

    Culture and History of Nåttarö

    The Legend of DrottninggrottanThe most famous place in the island's history is the cave Drottninggrottan. According to tradition, it served as a hiding place for Queen Maria Eleonora in the early 17th century when she fled from court and government after the death of her husband, King Gustav II Adolf.Protection of Nature and the SeaToday, Nåttarö is protected as a nature reserve and is one of the first marine nature reserves in the region. The many small skerries in Nåttaröfladen are an important breeding ground for seabirds, which is why a ban on entering several islands applies there between February 1 and August 15.Life in SummerIn summer, the holiday village, restaurant, and guest harbour shape island life. Boaters use the protected natural harbours, such as the popular Östermarsfladen in the north.

    Getting ThereAccess Nåttarö by excursion boat from Nynäshamn (approx. 30-minute journey). Waxholmsbolaget also serves the island, or you can book a water taxi. From Stockholm, take the commuter train to Nynäshamn; tickets are available in the SL-App. Find current boat schedules directly with the operators.On the IslandNåttarö has no car traffic. Explore on foot or by rental bike along gravel roads and forest paths; a kayak reveals the coves from the water. Taxis or e-scooters are unavailable, so plan your routes accordingly.

    Nynäshamn

    Nynäshamn

    Nynäshamn lies about 60 kilometres south of Stockholm and is one of the mainland ports for ferries to Gotland. Additionally, ships sail from here to Gdańsk in Poland. It also serves as a starting point for the southern archipelago. In summer, the harbour is full of boats, with restaurants and small shops lining the promenade. The surrounding area offers coastal paths and nature reserves inviting visitors for walks. Nynäshamn is an easy day trip from Stockholm by commuter train.

    Utö is a larger island in the southern archipelago in the municipality of Haninge. It combines archipelago nature with industrial history: traces of several centuries of mining are still visible today. The calcareous subsoil ensures a rich flora with many orchid species in the nature reserve in the north. In summer, you'll find numerous swimming spots; the best way to explore the island is by rental bike. You can reach Årsta brygga by bus 846 from Västerhaninge commuter train station; from there, the Waxholmsboat sails year-round to Gruvbryggan, and in summer, also directly from Strömkajen in Stockholm in about three hours.

    Södermalm is known as the hub of Stockholm's alternative and creative scene. From the island's hills, you'll enjoy sweeping skyline views, plus independent boutiques, cafés, and a vibrant nightlife.

    Fjäderholmarna

    The Fjäderholmarna are a small group of islands at the start of the Stockholm archipelago, about 20 minutes by boat from the city center. They belong to the municipality of Lidingö and to the Royal National City Park. On the most visited island, Stora Fjäderholmen, you will find craft studios, small shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as an open-air exhibition of traditional archipelago boats. The islands are a good choice for a first impression of the archipelago without a long journey. The visiting season runs from May to mid-September.
    Gamla Stan

    Gamla Stan

    Gamla Stan, Stockholm's historic Old Town, is located on the island of Stadsholmen and represents the city's medieval heart. Here you'll discover narrow cobblestone streets, colorful merchant houses, and historic squares that define the urban landscape. The Royal Palace, Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral), and the Nobel Museum on central Stortorget are key attractions. Particularly characteristic are the narrowest alley, Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, as well as the many small boutiques and traditional cafés. Founded in the 13th century, the district preserves its charm with buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. To experience the special atmosphere undisturbed, a visit in the early morning hours is recommended. Also, plan time for a traditional Fika in one of the cozy cafés.
