Nelspruit

The Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Nelspruit is a unique institution dedicated to the conservation and presentation of the indigenous flora of the South African Lowveld. Here you'll find an impressive variety of plant species, including rare and endemic growths, thriving in carefully designed themed gardens and natural habitats. A special feature of the garden is the confluence of the Crocodile River and the Nels River, which results in spectacular waterfalls and a lush riverine landscape. You can cross the rivers via a striking suspension bridge and experience the unspoiled nature from a different perspective. The garden was founded in 1969 and also houses one of the few remaining natural Lowveld forests. Our tip: It's best to visit the garden early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat and optimally enjoy the tranquility of nature. For impressive photos of the waterfalls and river mouth, the area around the suspension bridge is ideal.

The Jane Goodall Institute sanctuary south of Mbombela takes in rescued chimpanzees. You see the animals in large enclosures on guided tours and learn their stories. Tours run at fixed times, check them beforehand.

The stalactite caves are set in ancient dolomite rock west of Mbombela. The guided tour also takes you into the large hall, the Amphitheatre. It's cool inside, so bring a light jacket.

Founded in 1969, the Botanical Garden lies at the confluence of the Crocodile and Nels Rivers. Paths wind to waterfalls, through riverine forest and collections of native plants, including many cycads. Mornings are most pleasant, when you'll hear the most birds.
