Roskilde Domkirke
The Roskilde Domkirke on Sjælland is an outstanding example of Northern European Brick Gothic and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you visit the traditional burial site of the Danish kings and queens, a tradition dating back to the 15th century. The cathedral houses the tombs of over 40 monarchs, including famous figures such as Margrethe I. and Frederik IX. Its architecture is a fascinating testament to architectural history, beginning with Romanesque elements in the 12th century, evolving into a magnificent Gothic structure. The various chapels and annexes reflect the different eras and architectural styles that were added over centuries. Our Tip: Plan your visit preferably in the morning to fully enjoy the tranquility and details of the tombs before larger visitor groups arrive. Also, be mindful of varying opening hours, especially on holidays or during church services. For an undisturbed view of the impressive red brick facade, the surrounding Cathedral Park is recommended.
