Die königliche Oper
The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, also known as Operaen, is an outstanding example of modern Danish architecture and a central pillar of national culture. Designed by Henning Larsen and opened in 2005, the building stands prominently on the island of Holmen, directly opposite the royal Amalienborg Palace. You'll see an impressive facade of Jura limestone and a widely cantilevered roof that spans the entire structure. Inside, warm maple wood panelling and a light-filled atmosphere dominate, creating an elegant backdrop for opera and ballet performances. The Opera houses three stages and is home to the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Danish Ballet. Our Tip: For the best exterior view and an impressive photo, we recommend a canal tour through the harbour basins or the view from the opposite bank in Nyhavn, especially in the evening hours when the building is illuminated. If you wish to explore the interior, book one of the guided tours on offer to discover the architectural details and the history behind the scenes.
