Christiania: from the Main Entrance to the Rampart
You walk from the main entrance on Prinsessegade via the former Pusher Street to the concert venues Loppen and Den Grå Hal, stop at Nemoland, and end on the old fortress wall Christianshavns Vold. Allow about two hours.

Vegetarian organic restaurant in a small, whitewashed house with a front garden, run as a collective. Two hot dishes and several salads change daily. Order at the counter; cutlery and water are self-service.
The restaurant is on the upper floor of an old barracks warehouse at the entrance to the Freetown. The cuisine is international with a Danish base, and the menu is small and changing. Open evenings only, closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Culture, Art & History of Christiania
Freetown Christiania was founded in 1971 when a group of squatters and hippies occupied an abandoned military barracks in Copenhagen and declared it a "Free Town." This founding was a direct response to housing shortages and the desire for an alternative lifestyle that distanced itself from established societal norms and focused on community.
Over the decades, Christiania evolved into a globally recognized social experiment and an autonomous community. Following extensive negotiations with the Danish state, the residents acquired a large part of the area in 2012, further solidifying Christiania's special status as a self-governing community with unique internal rules.
The architecture in Christiania is a direct expression of this independence and creativity. It is characterized by improvised, often very artistic and individually designed houses, frequently built from recycled materials, reflecting a do-it-yourself culture. Local traditions include grassroots democratic self-governance through consensus decisions, a strong emphasis on environmental protection, and a flourishing alternative art scene with numerous workshops, galleries, and music events.
Nightlife
Concert club in the same warehouse building as Spiseloppen, accommodating a few hundred guests. On stage are primarily rock, indie, and jazz bands, and the audience stands close to the musicians.
Cafe and bar with a large terrace in Freistadt's center. Daytime offers food and drinks at fair prices, with live music often playing evenings and weekends.
Exploring locally
Within Christiania, you travel on foot or by bike; cars are not permitted. The main entrance is on Prinsessegade, and from the **Christianshavn** Metro station (M1, M2) it's about a ten-minute walk.Several bus lines stop nearby. From the city centre, cycling is the fastest option; you can reach Christianshavn from Nyhavn in just a few minutes via the Inderhavnsbroen bridge.
