Indre By (Old Town)

The history of Indre By, Copenhagen's Old Town, is inextricably linked to the development of the Danish capital. Originally founded in the 12th century by Bishop Absalon, the city flourished as an important trade hub and royal residence. Defining events like the Great City Fires of 1728 and 1795 led to widespread destruction, but enabled reconstruction in the Neoclassical style, which still shapes the cityscape today.The architecture of Indre By is a fascinating mix of preserved medieval street structures and the elegant, often colorful buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries. Landmarks such as Christiansborg Palace, seat of the Danish Parliament, or the Rundetårn, a 17th-century observatory, bear witness to Copenhagen's long history and its role as a center of power. Numerous museums, galleries, and theaters invigorate the cultural hub and reflect its rich history.Local traditions and unique characteristics are deeply rooted in Danish identity. Although "Hygge" is a nationwide concept, it particularly manifests itself in Indre By through its cozy cafés and small shops. The Old Town is best explored on foot; much of it is pedestrianised and distances are short. Rådhuspladsen to Nyhavn is a good 20-minute walk via Strøget.The Metro stops at Kongens Nytorv, Nørreport, Rådhuspladsen and Gammel Strand, among others; S-trains and regional trains also stop Central Station and Nørreport. Canal boats and the harbour bus connect Nyhavn with the Opera and Christianshavn. Cycling is quick in the city centre, but not allowed on Strøget itself.
