    The Puy de Sancy, at 1886 meters, is the highest peak of the Massif Central. From the top, you'll see the Monts Dore and, on a clear day, all the way to the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys. Marked hiking trails lead to the top; from Le Mont-Dore, a cable car takes you almost to the peak. In winter, the ski resorts of Le Mont-Dore and Super-Besse are found on the mountain.

    Lac Chambon is of volcanic origin; its formation by a lava flow from the Tartaret volcano geologically shaped the region. Human settlement in the surrounding area, however, dates back a long way, with roots extending to the Gallo-Roman period.In the Middle Ages, the area was part of historical Auvergne, a region known for its strategic importance and numerous noble residences. The architecture of the surrounding villages is characterized by traditional natural stone houses, often with roofs made of local slate tiles. The nearby Abbey Church of Saint-Nectaire, a masterpiece of Auvergnat Romanesque art, bears witness to the rich sacred architecture of this era. Cultural distinctive features manifest themselves to this day in the regional gastronomy, particularly through the production of Auvergne cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire, and in traditional craft techniques.
