Cape Byron is the easternmost point of the Australian mainland.Surf culture, organic farms, markets, and a strong alternative scene characterize the region. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are about a two-hour drive north.
The Northern Rivers region in New South Wales captivates with its relaxed atmosphere, lush nature, and alternative culture. At its heart lies Byron Bay, with its iconic lighthouse and world-class surf beaches. The subtropical hinterland entices with rainforest, waterfalls, and charming towns like Mullumbimby, as well as alternative Nimbin. Its cultural diversity is deeply rooted in the history of the Arakwal-People; here you can surf, explore the rainforest, or visit local markets. For a quieter experience, a visit in spring or autumn is recommended, outside of the Australian school holidays. In the mornings, dolphins and whales are often sighted at the lighthouse.

Nimbin is located in the hinterland of the Northern Rivers, about an hour's drive west of Byron Bay. Since the Aquarius Festival in 1973, this small village has been considered the center of Australia's counterculture.The brightly painted main street, with its galleries, cafés, and shops, is quickly explored. Surrounding it are the rock formations of the Nimbin Rocks and the Nightcap National Park.

Cape Byron Light

Minyon Falls
The waterfall in Nightcap National Park plunges approximately 100 m over a rhyolite rock face. Viewing platforms are near the car park, a circular trail leads through rainforest to the foot of the falls.
Wollumbin (Mount Warning)
An extinct volcano's remains shape the hinterland between Byron Bay and the Queensland border. The mountain is sacred to the Bundjalung; the summit path has been closed since 2020. It's best viewed from local lookouts, for example near Uki.

Spring and autumn are warm and less rainy than summer. From December to March it is hot and humid; during school holidays, Byron Bay is very crowded. In winter it is mild, ideal for whale watching.

Land of the BundjalungThis region is Bundjalung Country. The area around Byron Bay is known in Arakwal as Cavanbah, “meeting place”. The Arakwal, in partnership with park authorities, manage the Arakwal National Park south of the town. For them, Wollumbin, the prominent volcanic mountain in the hinterland, is a sacred site.Whaling, Timber, and AquariusFor a long time, Byron Bay's economy relied on timber, dairy farming, and until 1962, a whaling station. In 1973, the Aquarius Festival in Nimbin drew thousands of young people to the region, many of whom stayed. This event sparked the counterculture still visible today, with its communes, organic farms, and markets.

The nearest airports are Ballina Byron and Gold Coast in Coolangatta, both about 30 to 45 minutes from Byron Bay. Buses connect the coastal towns, but you'll need a car for the hinterland.Parking in Byron Bay: Scarce and paid in the town centre, meters at the Cape.Hinterland: Winding roads lead to Mullumbimby, Bangalow, and Nimbin, about 30 to 70 minutes away.Flooding: After heavy rainfall, hinterland roads can be closed; the region was last severely affected in 2022.
