The largest island of the Whitsundays is uninhabited and almost entirely a national park. On its east coast lies Whitehaven Beach, and in the north, the lookout over Hill Inlet. To the west, Cid Harbour offers protected anchorages and a hiking trail to the highest peak.

Lookout Beach
Small beach at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach below the Hill Inlet Lookout. At low tide, you can wade here through the sandbanks of the Inlet.
Gulnare Inlet
Quiet, mangrove-fringed bay on the west side of the island. Sheltered anchorage for sailors, good for paddling at high tide.
Tongue Bay
Bay north of Hill Inlet, where day boats anchor. The path to the viewpoint starts from here. You often see sea turtles in the bay.
Whitehaven Beach
Seven kilometers of almost pure quartz sand beach, staying cool even in the midday sun. Most boats land at the south end or the north end at Hill Inlet. There is hardly any shade, bring water and sun protection.

Land of the NgaroThe island is part of the Ngaro’s land, who travelled between the islands by canoe. Middens and stone tools bear witness to their long presence.Wood and National ParkIn the late 19th century, timber was felled in Cid Harbour, a fact recalled by the name Sawmill Beach. Today, the island is almost entirely protected.
Getting Here & About
Day trips aboard speedboats depart from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island. Sailing tours often anchor overnight off the island. Seaplanes land directly in front of Whitehaven Beach.To go camping, you will need a permit from Queensland Parks.From November to May, wear a stinger suit when swimming.Take water, sun protection, and your rubbish with you.
