    Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)

    The island's most famous lake with clear, blue water over white quartz sand. Many tours visit during the day; it's quiet early in the morning. Food only in the fenced picnic area.

    Clear lake with white sand beach south of Lake McKenzie. Similarly beautiful, but significantly less visited.

    3Lake Boomanjin

    Large, tea-coloured lake in the south of the island. The water is reddish-coloured by plant matter. It is considered one of the largest Perched Lakes in the world.

    4Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek

    Former logging station in the rainforest with a picnic area and information boards. A wooden boardwalk leads along the crystal-clear Wanggoolba Creek, which flows silently over white sand.

    5Basin Lake

    Small, quiet lake near Central Station, accessible via a hiking trail through the forest. Rarely visited and good for swimming.

    Culture and History

    Land of the ButchullaThe lakes are culturally important to the Butchulla; some were ceremony sites. Lake McKenzie is Boorangoora in their language.The Logging EraCentral Station became the centre of the island's forestry from the 1920s. Wood was harvested from the tall Satin and Kauri tree stocks until the timber industry ended in 1991. Information boards recall this time.

    Traveling between the Lakes

    You can only reach the lakes with a 4WD or on guided tours from Kingfisher Bay, Hervey Bay, or Rainbow Beach. The tracks are single-lane; oncoming traffic must yield.Lower tire pressure before driving, and take a recovery strap.At Lake McKenzie, eating on the beach is only allowed in the fenced area, because of the dingos.Rinse off sunscreen before swimming, it pollutes the sensitive lakes.
