Eli Creek

Eli Creek is one of Fraser Island's (K'gari) largest and best-known freshwater streams, daily feeding millions of litres of crystal-clear water directly into the Pacific. Its ecological significance is immense, as the water is naturally filtered by the island's thick sand layers, boasting exceptional purity. Here, you can stroll along a picturesque boardwalk that follows the creek, offering excellent views of the lush riverside vegetation. Many visitors seize the chance to gently float downstream on a swim ring in the cool, refreshing water – a truly unique natural experience. Our Tip: To fully savour the serenity of this special spot and capture the best photos without crowds, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is highly recommended. Remember to bring a swim ring if you wish to float downstream.

S.S. Maheno

The S.S. Maheno, a once luxurious passenger liner launched in 1905, is now an iconic wreck on Fraser Island's (K'gari) 75 Mile Beach. Its history is fascinating: originally operating between New Zealand and Australia, it served as a hospital ship in World War I. In 1935, while being towed for scrap, it was caught in a cyclone, ran into distress, and was stranded here. What you see today is an impressive, rusting skeleton, defying the elements and becoming one of the island's most photographed landmarks. The wreck offers a stark contrast to the surrounding natural beauty, silently telling tales of bygone eras. Our tip: Visit the S.S. Maheno at low tide to ensure the best access and safest conditions. For breathtaking photos, we recommend early mornings or late afternoons when the light is softer and crowds are smaller. For safety reasons and to protect the wreck, do not climb on it.

Lake Allom

Lake Allom on K'gari (Fraser Island) is an outstanding example of the island's unique freshwater lakes. As a so-called 'Perched Lake', it is a geological marvel: it formed as organic matter solidified over millennia, creating a waterproof layer that collects only rainwater. Here you'll find an ecologically intact system, whose water gains a characteristic dark tint from the tannins of the surrounding vegetation, yet remains crystal clear. A visit promises a tranquil oasis, surrounded by dense rainforest. What makes Lake Allom special are the numerous freshwater turtles that often surface and display their curiosity. It's an ideal spot for a refreshing dip in the cool, clean water. Please refrain from feeding the animals to preserve their natural behaviour. Our tip: Visit the lake in the early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the greatest tranquility and have the best chance of spotting the turtles. Access is via sand tracks and requires a 4WD vehicle, as is common on K'gari. Allow ample time to soak in the peaceful atmosphere of this special place.

K'gari, better known as Fraser Island, has been the ancestral home of the indigenous Butchulla people for over 5,000 years. The name K'gari itself means "Paradise" in their language, reflecting the deep spiritual and cultural connection the Butchulla maintain with this unique landscape. Their ancestral stories and traditions are inextricably linked to the island's natural features, such as its freshwater lakes and sand dunes.The arrival of European settlers in the 19th century brought an era of logging and sand mining, which severely impacted the ecosystem. Today, only a few relics, such as rusted machinery, bear witness to this industrial past. K'gari's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992 underscored the urgent need to protect its cultural and natural heritage and to acknowledge the traditional knowledge of the Butchulla.Butchulla culture is characterized by a deep-rooted respect for the land, which manifests in their Lore. Although no distinct traditional architecture in the European sense exists, the island's natural sites themselves hold immense cultural significance, being anchored in Butchulla creation stories and practices. Visitors are today encouraged to experience this rich history with mindfulness and respect.
