    The Settlers' LegacyFrutillar was founded in 1856 by German immigrants, and the town visibly nurtures this heritage. Opened in 1984, the Museo Colonial Alemán of the Universidad Austral de Chile displays a manor house, a water mill, the Casa del Herrero with tools and farm machinery, and the round Campanario where wheat was threshed, plus a garden, on the slope above the shore.In the townscape of Frutillar Bajo, this continues: shingle facades, steep roofs, and front gardens along Avenida Philippi, along with the Lutheran church near the lake shore. Many of the old houses are now guesthouses, cafés, or private homes.Music City by the LakeThe second pillar is music. Since 1968, the Semanas Musicales have taken place every summer between January and February, held at the Teatro del Lago since 2010. The venue opened in November 2010, its main hall accommodating 1,178 spectators. It offers a year-round program and its own music school. In 2017, Frutillar became the first city in Chile to be admitted to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Music.

    Exploring Locally

    You explore Frutillar Bajo on foot; otherwise, it makes no sense: the museum, theater, cafés, and beach are all located on or near the waterfront road. Between Frutillar Alto and Bajo, it's about two kilometers downhill, and colectivos operate.Regular buses run daily from Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt; the journey takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on your starting point. Long-distance buses usually stop in Frutillar Alto on Ruta 5; from there, you'll need to go the last stretch down to the lake.With a rental car, you are more flexible, especially for circling the lake or driving to Osorno Volcano. In summer, parking directly on the promenade becomes tight.
