Gilleleje

The undeveloped coastal slopes east of the harbour stretch above the beach towards Nakkehoved. A path runs along the top, and steps descend to the water. With clear visibility, you can spot the Swedish coast.

The steep coast west of Gilleleje is Zealand's northernmost point. A memorial stone recalls Søren Kierkegaard, who walked here. It's a short walk from the car park. In spring, ornithologists observe the migration here.

The two lighthouses of Nakkehoved were built in 1772, approximately three kilometers east of the harbour. The Østre Fyr has been out of operation since 1898 and is one of the few preserved coal-fired lighthouses in the world. In the western lighthouse, which is still in operation, a small museum shows the history of the lights; from the tower, you look out over Kattegat and Øresund. The museum is only open seasonally.

In October 1943, Jewish refugees hid in the attic of the small church, awaiting passage to Sweden. Many of them were discovered during a Gestapo raid. A memorial plaque commemorates this.
