Hillerød

Northern Zealand between Copenhagen and the Kattegat is the region of royal castles. Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Fredensborg, old hunting forests, the Louisiana Museum, and seaside resorts on the North Coast are all close by.

Zealand's North Coast between Helsingør and Liseleje is a strip of bright sandy beaches, dunes and pine forests. Hornbæk, Gilleleje and Tisvildeleje are the most popular resorts.

Gilleleje, on Zealand's northern tip, still thrives on its harbour. Fishing cutters dock daily; around the basin, smokehouses and fishmongers sell their catch. Behind the harbour, the old town centre begins with low-rise houses and Hovedgade.In October 1943, Gilleleje was one of the places from which Danish Jews fled to Sweden in fishing boats. Today, most come for the beaches and the steep coast between Gilbjerg Hoved in the west and Nakkehoved in the east.

Helsingør lies at the Øresund's narrowest point, just four kilometers from Sweden. For centuries, the Crown collected Sound Dues here from every ship passing through. Kronborg Castle and the Old Town's merchant houses attest to this.Next to Kronborg, on the old shipyard grounds, is Kulturværftet, with its underground Maritime Museum and a market hall. Between the harbor and train station, Stengade and Strandgade lead through the Old Town with its half-timbered houses, the Carmelite Monastery, and the Cathedral.

Helsingborg lies at the narrowest point of the Öresund, just four kilometers from Danish Helsingør. Its landmark is the medieval Kärnan tower above the old town. With its harbor promenade, the Dunkers Cultural Centre, and Sofiero Castle north of the city, Helsingborg is good for a day trip or as a base on the west coast of Skåne.
