    The Kattegattleden is a signposted long-distance cycling route along the west coast from Helsingborg to Gothenburg. The first stage takes you from the city center, past Sofiero and the coastal towns along the Öresund, to Höganäs on Kullaberg.

    The former summer palace of the Swedish royal family is located about five kilometers north of the city center, overlooking the Öresund. The park is renowned for its rhododendron collection, which Gustaf VI. Adolf and Crown Princess Margaret established from 1905. The palace and park are open from late March to October, with light events taking place in late autumn.

    Helsingborg: Kärnan to the port

    Øresund border city

    Between Denmark and SwedenHelsingborg is mentioned in sources as early as 1085 and belonged to Denmark until 1658. Together with Helsingør Fortress on the opposite side, Helsingborg Castle controlled the entrance to the Öresund Strait. Of this complex, only the brick tower Kärnan from the 1310s remains. After its transfer to Sweden, the city changed hands in several wars, until in 1710 the Swedish army repelled the last Danish attempt to regain Skåne at the Battle of Helsingborg. Also dating from the Middle Ages is the Gothic brick church Sankta Maria kyrka near Stortorget.Industrial City and Royal SeatIn the 19th century, Helsingborg grew with its harbour, railway, and industry; in 1892, Sweden's first steam ferry service to Helsingør began operating here. The Neo-Gothic Town Hall from 1897 by the harbour dates from this period. Sofiero Palace served as a summer residence for the Swedish royal family; King Gustaf VI Adolf and Crown Princess Margaret established the famous rhododendron collection there. Today, institutions like the Dunkers Culture Centre, with art exhibitions and stages, and the Fredriksdal Open-Air Museum shape the city's cultural offerings.

    Getting there and around in Helsingborg

    Most transport options meet at Knutpunkten station, right by the harbour.Train: Öresundståg and Pågatåg connect Helsingborg to Lund, Malmö, and via the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen. The West Coast Line runs north towards Gothenburg.Ferry: Øresundslinjen ferries to Helsingør run nearly 24/7, with frequent departures; the crossing takes about 20 minutes.Bus: Skånetrafiken runs city and regional buses. Tickets via the Skånetrafiken App. Buses also reach Sofiero and northern coastal towns.On Foot and By Bike: Harbour, Stortorget, and Kärnan are close by. The 390-kilometre Kattegattleden cycle path runs north along the coast to Gothenburg.
