    The Gothic brick house dates back to before 1496 and served as the city's Town Hall from 1708 to 2007. In the former debtors' prison, a small exhibition displays items from Ribe's legal history, such as the city seal, a morning star, and thumbscrews.

    An open-air museum south of the city with reconstructed Viking Age houses, workshops, and fields. In season, costumed volunteers are present, alongside animals and children's activities. Off-season, it's quieter.

    The Cathedral is considered Denmark's oldest, its stone structure begun around 1150 and extended over centuries. Inside, you'll find modern frescoes and mosaics by Carl-Henning Pedersen. Admission is free, but for climbing the Civic Tower with around 250 steps, you pay a small fee.

    Ribe: From Cathedral to Storm Pillar

    You walk from the Dom, past Torvet and the old Weis Stue inn, through Puggaardsgade to the former Dominican Monastery, on to the Art Museum and Café Quedens Gaard, ending at the Storm Flood Column by the old harbour. Allow about two hours.

    Ribe is small enough that all the essentials take place between the market square, the cathedral, and the riverbank of the Ribe Å. The cuisine is inspired by the Wadden Sea and marshland.

    The old inn on the market square is one of the country's oldest. Low beamed ceilings, crooked floors, plus Danish cuisine.

    Ribe Å at Skibbroen features eateries with outdoor seating. In summer, the city's most pleasant spot.

    Culture and History

    Around 700, a marketplace emerged along the Ribe Å, becoming one of the most important trading sites of the Viking Age. In the 9th century, the missionary Ansgar built one of Scandinavia's first churches here. The present cathedral was started around 1150.In the Middle Ages, Ribe was a rich episcopal and trading town. It later lost significance, allowing the old town to remain largely preserved. Storm surges flooded the town repeatedly; a column at the harbour displays the water levels. The tradition of the night watchman continues for visitors in summer.

    Ribe is on the Esbjerg–Tønder railway line, roughly 30 minutes from Esbjerg. From the station, you're just minutes from the old town, which you can explore on foot. The best way to get to the Viking Centre and the Wadden Sea Centre is by bike or car.
