Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence was founded in 123 BC by the Romans as Aquae Sextiae and served as a significant regional center for centuries. In the Middle Ages, it developed into the capital of historical Provence and experienced its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries as the seat of the Parliament of Provence, which led to the construction of numerous magnificent city palaces.The city's architecture is characterized by a blend of Roman remnants, medieval alleys, and the elegant Baroque and Rococo facades along the famous Cours Mirabeau. The Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur, with its mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque stylistic elements, bears witness to the various eras of the city's history.Culturally, Aix is inextricably linked with the Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne, who was born and spent most of his life here. The charming Old Town of Aix-en-Provence is easily explored on foot and largely traffic-free. For longer journeys within the city, a well-developed local bus network is available. To explore the picturesque Provençal surroundings, rental cars or taxis are recommended.
