    Chantilly, approximately 40 kilometers north of Paris, is closely associated with its castle and equestrian tradition. The Château de Chantilly is home to the Musée Condé, one of France's most significant collections of old master paintings, featuring valuable manuscripts. The Grandes Écuries, the 18th-century Great Stables, today house the Horse Museum, where equestrian shows are regularly held. The expansive castle park combines a French garden by Le Nôtre with an English landscape park and the Hameau. Spring and autumn are excellent times to visit the gardens. Don't forget to try the Crème Chantilly, named after the town.

    The castle, set amidst water features, houses the Musée Condé, home to one of France's most important collections of old master paintings, including works by Raphael and Poussin, as well as the manuscript of the "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry". The Duke of Aumale bequeathed the castle and collection to the Institut de France. The park, with its grand canal, was designed by André Le Nôtre.

    The sugared, vanilla-flavored whipped cream is traditionally attributed to the 17th-century castle household. At the Hameau in the park, it is still served freshly whipped today.

    Chantilly: History, Art and Traditions

    Chantilly evolved from a medieval castle seat to a princely residence. In the 16th century, the estate belonged to the Montmorency family, and from 1643, to the Princes of Condé, who transformed it into a center of culture and courtly life.Today's Château de Chantilly combines the Renaissance Petit Château with the Grand Château, which Henri d'Orléans, Duc d'Aumale, had rebuilt in the late 19th century. He bequeathed the entire estate, along with its art collection, today's Musée Condé, to the Institut de France.Culturally, Chantilly is closely linked to horses, evident in the Grandes Écuries, built from 1719 according to plans by Jean Aubert, and which today house the Horse Museum. Another specialty is Crème Chantilly; legend attributes it to François Vatel, the maître d'hôtel of the Grand Condé, but the name is historically documented only in the 18th century.

    Exploring Locally

    From Paris Gare du Nord, reach Chantilly-Gouvieux via TER regional train (approx. 25 min) or RER D (approx. 45 min). The château is a 30-minute walk from the station, or take a bus. The town centre, Grandes Écuries, and Château Park are easily explored on foot. For exploring the surrounding forest, bikes are ideal.

The adjoining Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is suited to long walks and bike rides. In the lanes of the old town, such as the Rue du Vieil Abreuvoir, you will find small boutiques and traditional shops. On weekdays it is quieter in the town and at the château. The RER A takes you here directly from central Paris, ideal for a day trip.
