Chinon

Chinon, deeply rooted in French history, presents itself as a living testament to bygone eras. The city on the Vienne, in the heart of the Loire Valley, looks back on a long history, ranging from Roman origins to its heyday in the Middle Ages. Its cultural heritage is inextricably linked to the mighty fortifications and the charming old town, which tell stories from centuries past.The history of Chinon is closely linked to significant personalities and events. Already settled in Roman times, the city gained great importance in the Middle Ages under the Plantagenets, the Kings of England, and later as a residence of French monarchs. Particularly formative was the arrival of Jeanne d'Arc in 1429, who met Charles VII here and moved him to resist the English – a turning point in the Hundred Years' War.Architecturally, the imposing fortress, the Château de Chinon, dominates, perched on a rocky spur above the city and reflecting various construction phases from Roman times to the Renaissance. The narrow streets of the old town are lined with well-preserved half-timbered houses and patrician residences, reflecting the wealth of past centuries, complemented by historic sacred buildings such as the Collégiale Saint-Mexme. Culturally, the region is also shaped by the famous humanist François Rabelais, who was born not far from Chinon and whose literary work is closely linked to the local mentality and viticulture.

Chinon is best explored on foot, especially its charming old town with its narrow streets and historic buildings. For excursions into the surrounding vineyards, to the Loire châteaux, and along the Vienne, bicycles are ideal. For longer distances and flexible exploration of the region, a car or the use of regional train connections is recommended.
