    Cherating is a small holiday resort on the coast of Pahang, north of Kuantan on the coastal road towards Kuala Terengganu. Along a wide bay, guesthouses, beach cafés, and batik workshops line up, the pace is leisurely.From approximately November to March, surfers come for the monsoon waves; for the rest of the year, it's a tranquil beach resort. In the evenings, guesthouses offer boat trips to see fireflies in the mangroves.

    The wide bay with its shallow sandy beach is the heart of the town. From approximately November to March, the monsoon brings waves, making Cherating one of Malaysia's few surf destinations, with surf schools renting boards. For the rest of the year, the sea is mostly calm.

    The turtle station is located at Bukit Cherating next to the Club Med resort, approximately 40 minutes on foot north of the village, partly along a busy road. Here, clutches are protected, incubated, and the hatchlings are later released. Admission is free. The station is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed at midday and for Friday prayer.

    Cherating was a small Malay fishing village; today most residents live from backpacking and beach tourism. The first Club Med in Asia once opened on the bay. To this day, the place is more laid-back than luxurious.In several shops on the main street, you can watch patterns being drawn and dyed with wax on fabric, or design a batik cloth yourself in a workshop.

    Getting Here and Around

    The nearest airport is in Kuantan; from there, a taxi or Grab will bring you to Cherating. From Kuantan's city bus station, take rapidKuantan buses to Balok and transfer to the Cherating line, which runs only about every two hours.You can walk around the village. For excursions, many guesthouses rent out bicycles and scooters.

    Kuala Tahan is the village at the confluence of Sungai Tahan and Sungai Tembeling and the main gateway to Taman Negara. Here you'll find most accommodations, the floating restaurants along the bank, and tour operator counters; the park headquarters is directly opposite on the other side of the river.

    The Canopy Walkways (Jambatan Kanopi) of Taman Negara traverse the rainforest on suspension bridges connecting platforms in the treetops. There are two walkways near Kuala Tahan: the approximately 530-meter long path at the foot of Bukit Teresek, opened in 1992, and the approximately 700-meter long path near Seberang Ara, which, according to the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, officially opened on June 22, 2026.The old path at Bukit Teresek was closed in 2024 due to safety concerns; in May 2025, lightning struck its main support tree. A reopening date was not known in October 2025; please inquire locally for the current status.

    The Bukit Teresek is a 334-meter-high hill behind the park headquarters in Kuala Tahan and the classic first hiking destination in Taman Negara. The trail starts flat in the rainforest, then becomes steeper and mostly leads over wooden boardwalks, partly over roots and rope sections, up to viewpoints with views over the park.

    Around Kuala Tahan live groups of the Batek, an Orang-Asli community, whose camps lie on the edge of Taman Negara. Local operators offer short boat trips to one of these camps, where residents demonstrate blowpipe shooting and fire-making and sell handicrafts.
