    Kampung Baru is the Malay village in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Separated from KLCC and the Petronas Towers only by the Klang River, traditional wooden houses still stand here amidst palm and frangipani trees. The district originated in 1899 from a land grant by the Sultan of Selangor as a settlement where Malays were meant to preserve their village way of life within the city.In the streets around **Jalan Raja Muda Musa**, you'll find simple Malay eateries serving Nasi Lemak, Satay, and Ikan Bakar. In the evening, cross the **Saloma Link** over to KLCC and enjoy the illuminated skyline before you.

    The 69-meter pedestrian bridge, opened in Feb 2020, connects Kampung Baru via the Klang River and the Ampang Elevated Highway to the KLCC district. From here, the Petronas Towers frame the view; the crossing takes just minutes. After sunset, the bridge is colorfully lit; a visit is most beautiful then.

    The traditional Malay community club hosted anti-colonial gatherings from which the UMNO party emerged. Next to the modern club building stands a building in traditional Malay style. The buildings are clearly visible from the outside; for access to the interior, check on site.

    Simple Nasi Lemak spot on Jalan Datuk Abdul Razak. Coconut rice with sambal, peanuts, egg, and ikan bilis, plus fried chicken or rendang. It's popular with locals, so prices are accordingly low.

    History and Culture

    Kampung Baru was established in 1899 on land provided by Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah of Selangor, to allow Malays to maintain their village lifestyle within the city. The district is designated as a Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS) and has long resisted redevelopment. Anti-colonial meetings, which led to the formation of the UMNO party, were held at the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman club.Typical are the traditional Malay wooden houses amidst palms and frangipani. Residents and the government have been negotiating over redevelopment plans for years.During Ramadan, the district becomes a meeting point for the city: From late afternoon, stalls sell dishes for breaking the fast, and visitors also shop here.

    Local exploration

    The Kampung Baru station on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line is located at the southern edge of the district; you're just a few stops away from KL Sentral and KLCC. To the north, the MRT Putrajaya Line stops at Raja Uda station, and on the western edge, the Monorail at Chow Kit station. The most convenient way to pay is with the Touch 'n Go card.Within the district itself, you get around on foot; the alleys between the houses are narrow and quiet. The Saloma Link takes you across the river and city highway to KLCC. For the return journey late at night, a car booked via the Grab app is the simplest solution.

    The Perdana Botanical Garden, still known to locals as Lake Gardens, is the green lung in the west of the city centre. Around a lake, you'll find lawns, ancient giant trees, themed gardens, and shady paths where people jog and practice Tai Chi in the mornings.Within and around the park, you'll discover the Orchid Garden and the Hibiscus Garden, the KL Bird Park, the National Monument Tugu Negara, and the National Museum. Come in the early morning or late afternoon, as it gets very hot on the open spaces at midday.
